    Old video but the information still holds true to this day. Had a buddy reach out with an issue of stripped threads and I sent him this video.

    What size do you need to drill out the hole to get a 5/16 bolt in a Healy coil

    Excellent presentation. Back in the day, as a welder, I was often tasked with weld repairs to both impellors and pump housings. Bronze and cast iron impellors and cast iron housings were typical. Both of those metals present substantial problems to almost any (electric) fusion weld process. Much of the metal to be resurfaced was lost to cavitation, most to erosion from sand and other materials in the water. I was never able to grasp how gas bubbles could remove metal nearly as effectively as sand and other contaminants could. My professor in Metallurgy 601, Dr. Ralf O'Brien (Northern Kentucky University 1986) never could get this through to me, though he was a great teacher. This presentation makes it more clear simply by giving the numbers: 60,000 psi, is a lot of pressure! Thank you for this program.

    This video is so helpful ive been installing helicoils without fully understanding whats going on and now i do and its glorious. thanks! also to other comments saying they are just for repairs, thats not totally true they are also useful if you have a soft metal part like aluminum but need to be able to screw bolts in and out repeatedly, since just aluminum threads will get messed up from that

    I have used Cross Wire Inserts (Helicoils) for many years, and they are much cheaper than this type of thread repair bush insert. Also if the stripped hole is close to the material edge, the Cross Wire Insert (the old original Cross Ltd) will work well, but the thicker bush insert may be too close to the material edge.

    Note that this video is pretty old. I noticed that the kits now come with a Red Loctite to use on the insert, probably for more strength...

      Easy out… it’s basically a reverse (left hand) threaded rod. The more your screw it in, (anti clockwise) the more it unscrews the insert (or a drilled out, snapped off bolt, for example).

    This is the basic theory of a helicoil kit, and a very good one. This video has real applications but I have found scenarios where some of this won't work. It could highlight the overall process a bit more, which is: (1)drill (2)tap (3)helicoil installation. In short, you drill to make a new, clean hole size. Tap to cut in new, larger threads. Install a new coil, which creates new threads. Now you have a new internal thread for your bolt. Made out of steel, which could be better than the original. Thanks for the video!!!

    But you're going to tap out the hole after you've drilled out the old threads, what's the point of the helicoil?

    • @MisterMooo
      @MisterMooo 3 года назад

      The drill bit is slightly larger than the original hole so you can tap the threads for the helicoil to fit.
